Wednesday, October 29, I’m excited to be part of an online event put on by the Society for Research into Higher Education (SRHE) in the UK called Reimagining Inclusive Education in Multilingual Contexts.

From the event description:

How can universities create more inclusive learning environments that recognise linguistic, cultural and epistemic diversity? Whether you are a higher education researcher, educator, practitioner or simply interested in how universities can become more inclusive, this promises to be a valuable opportunity for discussion and exchange.

My talk is entitled Supporting Linguistic Diversity in English-Medium Instruction (EMI) Contexts via the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Framework. I will considers how UDL can support multilingual learners by embedding flexibility into EMI course design and moving beyond deficit-based approaches to language support.

There will be two other speakers: Dr Tippu Sheriff will explore inclusive curriculum design and representation in the chemical sciences. Dr Sarah Hopkyns will consider language, identity, belonging and decoloniality in multilingual university spaces. It will then be followed by a discussion Discussion led by Dr Ibrar Bhatt, Dr Sal Consoli and Dr Zhen Li (李蓁), and a Q and A moderated by Dr Dylan G. Williams.
