I’m in the UK at my 11th IATEFL Conference since I started attending in 2013. It’s one of the main events in my own personal PD calendar every year.
I’m presenting as part of a forum on Forum on Critical Perspectives in EMI Education, on Tuesday, April 21 at 2:20pm, alongside
- Situated Linguistic Capital Theory: Understanding the Dynamics of Trust in EMI. Dylan Glyn Williams, Queen Mary University of London.
- Understanding EMI Lecturers’ English Language Competence and Concerns. Saida Akbarova, Westminster International University, Tashkent.
Here’s the abstract:
EMI content lecturers are important language policy brokers. However, language policymaking is a competency rarely found in the curriculum of EMI training programs, which often target pedagogical and communication skills. This talk explores the creation of a module focused on developing language policymaking skills as part of two EMI training programs. This talk has implications for those involved in EMI lecturer training and higher education language policymaking.
I’m going to be building on the ideas I put forward in this blog post last year about the place for policy in EMI lecturer training, taking examples from the Critical EMI Practitioner Training Program I developed, as well as work I’ve done on the Dalhousie University Certificate in EMI.
Slides will be posted here shortly!
