“It’s difficult for me, but interesting”: Chinese Undergraduates’ Perception of Task-Based Language Teaching
This study was an examination of the student experience of task-based language teaching (TBLT) in a Chinese provincial university context. Chinese undergraduates’ perceptions of TBLT and their evaluations of its effects on their learning and engagement are explored via a study focusing on a group of 186 first-year undergraduate students at a provincial university in northern China. Through a sequential explanatory study, students reported high levels of learning and engagement during task-based instruction, while also sharing the challenges in fluency, vocabulary, and confidence which were barriers to full participation in tasks. Student accounts provide important insight that can help shape task design and delivery for more effective application of TBLT in Chinese higher education settings.
